The following short film shows how the German government is expanding its surveillance methods over the population.The dimensions the whole subject has assumed so far is at least scary! Welcome to the German ‘1984′. Germany HAS BECOME a Big Brother State! The right-wing government has been increasing step by step the collection of information about the German population: all internet communication is registered, information about (mobile) phone calls is stored, biometric data are now stored centrally by the state, surveillance cameras are being installed step by step in German towns, etc etc…. Each German citizen is now a potential terrorist, a potential pedophile, a potential corrupt, a potential Che Guevara, and so on….

But where is the problem about this? Ultimately, you just have to be a good consumer and the whole thing is not that bad… Isn’t?

What is happening in German is happening in whole of Europe, in some countries more intense than in other, in some more obviously than in others. But this reality has to change! It is about our freedom to think, to move, to act, to decide, etc… It is about DEMOCRACY!

Well, just watch the movie! I think it is quite well done!

Note: The film is spoken in German, but the authors are working on an English version which should be coming out soon.I will update it here when the time has come.

This documentary movie talks about the (missing) mobility reality in the metropolis of São Paulo in Brazil. It lists the vast problems related to the massive use of the car in this town [e.g. more people use the car than public transportation, a unique situation]. Although the film was made in São Paulo, it is representative for the reality in so many other towns of the American continent and of the world.

So, it is not a US phenomena only (although it probably started there), but a global one.  So I encourage every mother and father on this planet to watch this movie.

4. April 1949! The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established . During 60 years the main objective of this organization was to “safeguard freedom and security of its member countries by political and military means”, always following “values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes” [find these words here]. What many do not know, is that the weapons used in the wars carried out here and there during this last decade contain  a radioactive material, the so called depleted Uranium (DU). The consequences of the use of DU weapons in arms conflicts are disastrous. In the documentary “Deadly Dust” (which by the way was practically censored in Germany, although produced initially for the German TV)  the filmmakers Freider Wagner and and Valentin Thurn show the horrendous reality of the persons and the regions contaminated with DU. Dr. Siegwart-Horst Gunther, a former colleague of Albert Schweitzer, and Tedd Weyman of the Uranium Medical Research Center (UMRC) traveled to Iraq and Yugoslavia, from Germany and Canada respectively, to assess uranium contamination.  The stories they tell show that the NATO have been committing serious war crimes!

One No, Many Yeses: A Journey to the Heart of the Global Resistance Movement is a wonderful book I was lucky to find somewhere in an old bookstore in South America.  The following text, taken directly from the site of the author,  Paul Kingsnorth, gives you an idea about the content. I encourage everyone engaged in changing something in this world to the better to read it.

Published in six languages in thirteen countries, One No, Many Yeses is a manifesto, an investigation and a travel book: an introduction to the new politics of resistance which shows there’s much more to the ‘anti-globalisation’ movement than trashing Starbucks.

It could turn out to be the biggest political movement of the twenty-first century: a global coalition of millions, united in resisting an out-of-control global economy, and already building alternatives to it. It emerged in Mexico in 1994, when the Zapatista rebels rose up in defiance of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The West first noticed it in Seattle in 1999, when the World Trade Organisation was stopped in its tracks by 50,000 protesters. Since then, it has flowered all over the world, every month of every year. The ‘anti-capitalist’ street protests we see in the media are only the tip of its iceberg. It aims to shake the foundations of the global economy, and change the course of history.

But what exactly is it? Who is involved, what do they want, and how do they aim to get it? To find out, Paul Kingsnorth travelled across five continents to visit some of the epicentres of the movement. In the process, he was tear-gassed on the streets of Genoa, painted anti-WTO puppets in Johannesburg, met a tribal guerrilla with supernatural powers, took a hot bath in Arizona with a pie-throwing anarchist and infiltrated the world’s biggest gold mine in New Guinea.

Along the way, he found a new political movement and a new political idea. Arms Business, A Profitable Business !

As a study release by  the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) early this year (see here) shows, the arms industry has been making more money than ever before in history.  Citing www.controlarms.org:

Each year, at least a third of a million people are killed directly with conventional weapons and many more are injured, abused, forcibly displaced and bereaved as a result of armed violence. In armed conflicts, the lives of skilled people are lost, infrastructure such as schools, clinics and homes are lost; economic production and markets disappear and investment takes flight. Even outside wartime, government arms purchases can exceed legitimate security needs, diverting substantial amounts of money away from health and education. In ‘peace time’, the presence and availability of arms often intensifies violence engendered by political protest, disputes between neighbours, crime and violence in the home.

Carlos Bosch and Josep Maria Domènech followed some of these Cubans in their adventurous journey to the US and kept contact with them in years following their arrival.  The first half of the documentary is filmed in Cuba and in Guantanamo Bay, where many “balseros” were kept in detention for several months by the US authorities. Some of the detainees were allowed to leave to the US because they were the winner of a local lottery carried out by the authorities. The second half of the film is about the lives of those who managed to get to the USA, how they were distributed over the country. These people were filmed again seven years later, showing their difficulties adapting to a new type of society and the resulting homesickness, a “human adventure of people who are shipwrecked between two worlds”.
